Where we can't prove something, we say so
What our certifications actually mean
Certifications get used as decoration. They are more useful when you know what they cover, and what they don't.
Prints
Certified sustainably managed forests
What it covers
- Forests managed to an audited standard
- Biodiversity and replanting
- Rights of the people working the forest
What it does not cover
- Recycled content
- Carbon
- The frame
Our paper is certified under FSC or an equivalent scheme, depending on which production partner is closest to you. We name the standard rather than one scheme, because that is what holds true for every order.
Apparel
GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard
What it covers
- Organic fibre content, verified
- Restricted chemical inputs
- Social and labour criteria
What it does not cover
- Freight
- Packaging
Applies to the cotton in our tees. Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops grown. GOTS is the most rigorous answer to that we have access to.
Apparel
OEKO-TEX
What it covers
- Tested for substances known to be harmful
- Passed for safe contact with skin
What it does not cover
- Organic content
- Environmental impact
Applies to the water-based inks we print garments with. OEKO-TEX is about safety. GOTS covers organic content. Nothing on this page covers environmental impact on its own.
Made to order
What we haven't solved yet
Every page like this one leaves something out. Here is what we would have left out if we were being less careful.
Our shipping is carbon-aware, not carbon-neutral
We route orders to cut distance, and we track it. We do not offset what is left over, and we are not going to call that neutral.
Our frames carry no certification
The pine we frame in is not certified under any forest management scheme we can verify. The paper inside it is. The frame is not, and we would rather say so than let the paper claim cover both.
We don't control which partner prints your order
We work with a global network of production partners, and your order goes to whichever one is closest. That is better for freight, but it means we cannot name a single certificate that applies to every order. It is why this page says certified sustainably managed forests rather than naming one scheme and hoping.
Our packaging still contains plastic
Most of it is card and paper, but some orders arrive with plastic protection and we have not designed it out yet. We could call the packaging plastic-free and most people would never check. We would rather tell you.
We don't publish our own emissions figures
We do not have them. Figures exist for the production network as a whole, but they describe thousands of businesses, not this one. Quoting them as though they were ours is the kind of thing this page exists to avoid.
