Framing Style

The Douglas Oak (Quercus douglasii), also known as Blue Oak, is a defining tree of California's foothill woodlands. Its distinctive blue-grey foliage and spreading canopy create the characteristic open savanna landscapes of the state's interior valleys.

Native Habitat

Quercus douglasii is endemic to California, growing in the dry foothills surrounding the Central Valley at elevations between 200 and 1,200 metres. It has adapted to the Mediterranean climate, shedding leaves during severe drought and regrowing when rains return.

Cultural Heritage

Indigenous Californian peoples, including the Miwok and Yokuts, relied heavily on blue oak acorns as a dietary staple. The species is named after Scottish botanist David Douglas, whose 1830s expeditions documented much of western North America's flora.
