Tsuga mertensiana grows at subalpine elevations from Alaska to central California, thriving in cool, moist conditions with deep snowpack. It often grows near the treeline, enduring harsh winters that shape its distinctive silhouette.

Cultural Heritage

Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest used hemlock bark for tanning hides and as a source of red-brown dye. The species is named after Karl Heinrich Mertens, a German botanist who collected in Alaska during an 1826 Russian expedition.
