The NSW Christmas Bush (Ceratopetalum gummifer) earns its name by bursting into colour just in time for the Australian summer holidays. Its small white flowers transform into vibrant red calyces, creating a festive display that has made it a beloved symbol of an Australian Christmas.

Native Habitat

Ceratopetalum gummifer is endemic to the forests and sandstone gullies of coastal New South Wales. It grows as an understory tree in moist eucalypt forests, favouring the sheltered slopes of the Sydney Basin and Blue Mountains.

Cultural Heritage

Used by Aboriginal peoples for its timber and bark. The species became an Australian Christmas tradition in the early 20th century, when florists began selling the brilliant red branches as a native alternative to imported holly and poinsettia.
