The Scarlet Banksia (Banksia coccinea) is one of the most visually striking members of the Banksia family, native to the south coast of Western Australia. Its brilliant scarlet and silver flower spikes emerge like natural sculptures against the coastal heathlands.

Native Habitat

Banksia coccinea is endemic to southwest Western Australia, growing in sandy soils along the coast between Albany and Esperance. It favours well-drained heathland and low woodland, often alongside other proteaceae species.

Cultural Heritage

Noongar peoples of southwest Australia used its nectar as a sweet food source and its flowers in seasonal ceremonies. The species was first formally described by Robert Brown in 1810 from specimens collected during Matthew Flinders' circumnavigation.
